Message from Andrew Try, The Lord-Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire

“Welcome to the website of the Berkshire Lieutenancy. I hope that you will use it to find out more about the role of the Lord-Lieutenant, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants.

Berkshire has seen many changes during the course of its history, but has always been a place where enterprise has flourished, whether in the thriving woollen industry of mediaeval times, the agricultural improvements of the eighteenth century, the industrial and commercial developments of the nineteenth or the high-technology industries of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It is a diverse county stretching from the edge of the London conurbation in the east to the rolling hills in the rural west and embracing both historic towns and major new towns and developments.

It is a great privilege to represent His Majesty The King in Berkshire and to support the many diverse communities throughout this Royal County. I look forward to meeting many of you in the course of my work, and have the greatest admiration for the varied contributions made by so many of you in so many walks of life in Berkshire."

The Lord-Lieutenant is appointed by HM The King. As the Monarch’s personal representative in the county it is the Lord-Lieutenant’s prime duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. In addition to the specific tasks described on this website, he follows the example of the Royal Family in encouraging and recognising the armed forces, voluntary and charitable organisations. He also takes a deep interest in the commercial, industrial and social life of the County.

The role of the Lord-Lieutenant is non-political.
